ASR Sunday Brief #19

What Shopify operators were talking about this week

From the founder:

For most of this year the discovery conversation in this brief has been about getting found - AEO, GEO, schema, citations, whether ChatGPT recommends you.

This week it flipped. The operators writing in weren't asking how to get people to the store. They were asking how to get people to the right product once they're already on it.

Different problem. Arguably the harder one.

Pattern of the week

"Discovery" showed up in most submissions this week. It meant the opposite of what it's meant all year.

Six of the nine operators who wrote in weren't asking how to get found. They were asking how to get a shopper who is already on the site to the right product. One wants customers to shop by spec instead of by category, and has already rebuilt his product pages around a guided configurator with cascading filters. One wants better navigation across an assortment two stores deep. One wants AI chat handling product discovery onsite. One is reworking descriptions and layout purely to lift add-to-cart. One just wants more sales out of the traffic she already has.

Why it matters: for a year this brief has tracked discovery as a top-of-funnel problem - schema, citations, whether ChatGPT recommends you. That work is real and it's underway across the network. But it delivers a visitor to the front door and stops there. The operators writing in this week have moved on to the part that happens after the click, and almost nobody is building for it with the same energy.

Getting found is worth nothing if the catalog is a maze once they arrive.

Referral contest - final stretch

The contest ends September 30, and we announce winners in next week's issue. If you've been meaning to send your link to someone, this is the window.

What you earn regardless: $50 for every Shopify store operator you refer, $100 for every Shopify Plus operator.

On top, for the three highest activated-referral counts:

  • 1st — $1,000

  • 2nd — $500

  • 3rd — $300

An activated referral is someone who signs up through your link and completes their first research call. A couple of good introductions is still enough to land on the board.

Genuine thanks to everyone who took part this month.

Two new comparisons — and how we build them

Two more head-to-head comparisons went live this week:

Worth explaining how these get made, because it's the whole point of them.

Every comparison is built from app reviews our participants wrote about tools they actually run. Not vendor briefings. Not affiliate rewrites. Not a writer summarising the app's own marketing page. The subscriptions piece is built on 25 operator reviews - 16 Recharge, 5 Appstle, 4 Loop. We publish the sample sizes, including when they're small, because you should know how much weight a verdict carries.

What comes out is different from the App Store version. The subscriptions comparison found that 60% rated their app "Very Satisfied" and 100% still actively use it - but the tension operators actually described was Recharge's reliability against its price, which is precisely why the challengers exist. That's the kind of thing you only learn from people 12+ months in.

If you run any of these apps, your review makes the next one better - add it from the App Stack tab in your account.
