ASR Sunday Brief #9

What Shopify operators were talking about this week

From the founder:

Welcome back to the ASR Sunday Brief - issue #9.

We just published our June 2026 ecosystem recap. The real story of the month isn't that Mantle shut down. It's that Shopify quietly ate another layer of the app-tooling stack. Scripts is off. Mantle is dead. App Pricing launched. Put those three events on a timeline and the pattern is clear - the platform is absorbing what used to be third-party by default.

Full breakdown below. Curious what you think comes next - hit reply.

Just published: Shopify App Store News - June 2026

Our full June ecosystem recap went live this week. Three things worth knowing about, in order of what will hit you first:

Scripts stopped executing entirely on June 30. If your checkout customization was still on Scripts and hasn't moved to Functions, it's not paused - it's off. Merchants: go check your checkout actually works today. Don't assume the migration you scheduled six weeks ago actually shipped.

Mantle wound down on June 16 — non-billing customers lose access August 14. Bigger than "find a new billing tool." Teams ran revenue tracking, churn analytics, affiliate programs, support, and lifecycle email through it. Lose it in one announcement and you're rebuilding four or five workflows at once, not swapping one vendor.

Spring '26 shipped 150+ updates with expanded Markets, upgraded analytics, and more Sidekick baked into admin. Worth reading properly if you build apps — new extension points always crack open first-mover categories.

There's a sharper editorial thread underneath all three: Shopify is quietly eating another layer of the app-tooling stack. Watch for who's next.

Pattern of the week

Since July 1, one small pattern keeps repeating in the intent data. When operators name AI as a focus area now, they almost never just write "AI" anymore. They name the tool - Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, MCP, n8n.

Three months ago, that vocabulary would have been rare. Now it's how nearly every AI-focused submission is written.

Why it matters: operators who name tools by name are usually further along than the ones who don't. They know what stack they're working with, what limitations they've hit, and what's still missing. If you're writing in generic terms, that's usually a signal you're still exploring, not building.

New App Reviews

Our brand network frequently writes reviews for apps they use. These reviews are visible from all Shopify app accounts under the App reviews tab.

Photo of the week

Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard at his Tin Shed blacksmith shop in Ventura, California. Chouinard forged pitons by hand to fund climbing trips, sold them from the back of his car. That side hustle became Patagonia - a $1.5B revenue company that Chouinard gave away to a trust in 2022 rather than sell.

See you next week.
