ASR Weekly #21
What Shopify operators were talking about this week

From the founder:
Week one of Q4 is usually the quietest week in our intent data. People plan, they bookmark, they say "after the season."
Not this one. Read the pattern below and you'll see what I mean.
Housekeeping: we're on a Thursday this week. Friday did better than Sunday, but not by enough to stop looking, so we're going to keep moving the day around for a few more weeks before settling. If a particular day works badly for you, tell me - that's useful data and it goes straight into the decision.

Pattern of the week

The first week of a quarter is usually when operators plan. This one wasn't.
Five of the fifteen submissions came in marked ASAP (0–30 days), and every single one of those five is actively replacing a tool they already pay for. One listed seventeen apps on the way out. One wants lifecycle flows and win-back sequences live before the season, not after it. One is rebuilding attribution because the Facebook numbers "certainly doesnt match what they say." One is going for "a lean model with AI and automation rather than more staff" - in October.
Why it matters: swapping a core tool during Q4 is the most expensive timing there is. Every one of these five knows that. They're doing it anyway, which tells you the pain was already past the point where waiting was the cheaper option.
Nobody rips out a tool in October for fun. When five do it in one week, the tools are the problem.
September, and the deadline nobody announced
Our September Shopify App Store roundup went up this morning. Three things in it deserve more than a skim:
Script tags are already gone, and most people haven't noticed. Since October 1 you can't create or update one - the call just errors. Existing script tags keep running until March 1, 2027, then stop. If anything in your store still injects through a script tag, you're on a clock, and the version of this that bites is discovering it mid-BFCM when you need to change a pixel ID and can't.
Return shipping gets taxed on October 23. Shopify Tax will start treating US return shipping fees like any other shipping charge. If you've been handling it manually, pull your workaround before the 23rd or you'll tax it twice - fifteen days, and it lands as returns volume climbs.
Your analytics baseline moved on September 21. Nine session-based metrics, conversion rate and bounce rate among them, now exclude bot and system traffic. Orders and sales are untouched. It means your year-over-year BFCM comparison is measuring two different things unless you account for it.
If you build apps, the roundup has a section of its own: Polaris 2.0 by May 1 2027, the dead Discounts Allocator declaration that silently fails your deploys, the new Dev Dashboard, billing migrations that no longer need merchant re-approval, and WebMCP checkout handoff. Returns apps in particular should look at the new tax fields before the 23rd.
And two things have landed since we published. Shop can now identify shoppers before checkout, syncing carts across devices with nothing to set up - read that twice if you sell abandoned-cart recovery. And discounts joined Rollouts on October 2, so you can finally split-test an offer natively. That last one is arithmetic: a test needs a week or two, Black Friday is 50 days out, so starting one in November is just an untested offer with extra steps.
From the feed this week
Three reads worth your time this week:
Kent Yoshimura, Co-Founder & CEO @ Neuro - on going from proving the brand out regionally to landing nationwide in Costco, and what that jump actually takes for a CPG founder →
Athan Didaskalou, Founder & Chief Strategy Officer @ July - on inventing a category and then watching trackable luggage outsell the non-trackable kind 4:1, in about the bluntest way a founder can put it →
Marc Elrick, Founder & CEO @ BYOMA - on treating a product launch as a statement about what the brand believes rather than another SKU on the shelf →
Photo of the week

For five days around Paris Fashion Week, rhode ran a café in the 6th arrondissement and sold nothing in it. No products, no samples. Visitors left with a "rhode metro card" - a physical voucher they then had to carry into a Sephora and spend against a rhode purchase by October 5 to claim anything.
It reads as a brand stunt. It's a routing mechanism. The whole thing exists to walk people out of a café and into a retail partner's doors with a deadline on them - timed to a launch across 19 new European markets and more than 500 stores, in a region where the only way to buy rhode used to be rhode's own site.
