ASR Weekly #22

What Shopify operators were talking about this week

From the founder:

Back on Friday this week. Of the days we've tried so far Friday did best, so it gets a second read before we call it - one week is a fluke, two is the start of an answer.

The pattern below is the one I'd actually like replies on. Something has shifted in what operators expect an app to do for them, and I don't think most app teams have noticed yet.

What people actually pay a page builder for

New this week: the best Shopify page builder apps, built from 31 operator reviews across 10 builders, collected between January 2024 and July 2026.

The useful part is that star ratings are no help here — every app in the category sits between 4.6 and 4.9, which tells you nothing. What operators wrote tells you plenty:

  • Control is the reason people pay. Flexibility and control came up in 10 of the 31 reviews, more than any other theme. Bugs and slow editors came up in 6. Missing or messy analytics in 4.

  • Retention and satisfaction come apart again. All nine PageFly reviewers still use it, but only 67% are "very satisfied" — people staying put without being thrilled. All five Replo reviewers are both, at $119/month to start.

  • Two of the better-known names divide the room. Shogun's reviewers were 0% very satisfied with half still using it; GemPages has a big App Store following but only 2 of 4 reviewers stayed, with cost and wrestling complex layouts the reasons given.

Sample sizes vary a lot across the ten, and the piece says which ones are too small to lean on. That's the point of printing them.

If you run any of these, your review makes the next one better — add it from the App Stack tab in your account.

Pattern of the week

Three operators this week described building the thing rather than buying it. One has been "creating my new website with Claude" with CRO in mind. One asked, in the submission field, "how much can my Claude Code automate everything?" One builds his own repair tracking, lab intake, customer service portal and receiving system - and then wrote the sentence every app team should read twice: he prefers "tools with solid APIs that integrate with Shopify and custom backends rather than closed systems."

The other half of it is what happens to the apps they do buy. One operator, replacing his recommendation engine inside 30 days, described its output as "basically random" and said what he actually wants is "real critical thinking - you purchased this and for that reason, I am suggesting this."

Why it matters: when an operator can stand up a working tool in a weekend, the question stops being "does this app exist" and becomes "is this better than what I'd build." That's a much higher bar, and it's being applied to categories that have coasted for years on being the only option.

The competition isn't the other app any more. It's a free afternoon and an API key.

Three reads worth your time this week:

Photo of the week

A DTC sleep brand that started life in 2021 as an afternoon coffee alternative is now sitting in Target's sleep aisle - next to capsules and melatonin gummies, as the only hot cocoa on the shelf.

The aisle was the decision. Put it with the vitamins and it's one more box among hundreds; put it with the sleep aids and it's the only thing there that looks like a drink.
